Volume 2 Outline
Part 1 – Theory
Chapter. Meso Theories of Power
I’m not sure if I need this chapter. The theory I mention below should all be included in the theory chapter of Volume 1.
Maybe Volume 1’s theory chapter can deal more with micro theories of power, and Volume 2’s theory chapter can address meso theories of power.
Engage with literatures, identify gaps and opportunities for theory-building
- meso (organizational) and macro (institutional) theories of power
- theories of party organization and party systems
- East Asian area studies of party politics in East Asia
Part 2 – Analysis of Political Networks and Party Organization
Chapter. Organizational Framework and Measures
Part 1 introduced the organization and networks framework of political power. Four types of ties correspond to common phenomena:
- self-ties, concurrent: joint appointments, interlocking directorates
- self-ties, sequential: career advancement, promotions, demotions,
- social-ties, concurrent: collusion, coordination,
- social-ties, sequential: patronage, dynastic politics
Part 2 extends this framework up to the meso-level, by measuring features of formal and informal organization, such as
- Vertically integrated tiers vs horizontally stratified tiers
- Embeddedness in formal, external organizations or informal communities and networks
- What else?
This section will also engage with the nets and orgs literature which has frequently called, but rarely delivered, methodological developments and empirical studies.

Part 3 should discuss the pros and cons of vertically coordinated vs stratified party organization, the pros and cons of embeddedness in local communities and national organizations.
